My Thoughts On Idol I (So Far)

Note: Do not read this if you're waiting for all episodes and don't want spoilers. Only half of the episodes are out as I am writing this.

Idol I is a K-drama on Netflix starring Choi Soo Yung as Maeng Se Na, a high profile lawyer who's known for defending controversial clients and getting them lenient sentences. By day she's a cutthroat lawyer and after work she's a K-pop fangirl for the group Golden Boys. Her bias is Do Ra Ik played by Kim Jae Yeong. He becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation after one of his group members is found murdered in his apartment. Maeng Se Na rushes to his aid to defend him and in the process of her getting to know her bias through a whole new lens, she also explores her feelings as a fan and how she feels about Do Ra Ik as a human rather than someone she puts on a pedestal.

When I say this show is good, it's really good and eye opening. I've seen other K-dramas address things within the scope of fandom and influencers and I have mentioned them before, but this one goes more into the parasocial relationship side of things. I had this show on my list but I was finishing up something else before I started it. Seeing clips of it on my feed I knew I had to dive right into it. Watching it, the first few episodes pissed me off right away because of the behavior of the sasaengs and seeing things play out that have actually happened to idols, some of whom I stan. It made me really sad and scared for these idols who just want to do what they love and entertain people.

There's a scene where we see Ra Ik dealing with what seems like PTSD, likely from dealing with harassment and sasaengs. He's at a fan sign for his solo release and a sasaeng asks him why he doesn't recognize her. This got to me because we (Threads ARMY) have often talked about how the same people game the system and end up at these fan signs over and over and often it's the sasaengs who end up being solos and post hate later about other members. Her demanding to be recognized was already unhinged then she demands his phone number because he keeps changing it. As she keeps up her selfish tirade he is experiencing tinnitus associated with anxiety. He hears this loud ringing in his ears that is effecting his ability to concentrate. She gets angry and throws a water bottle at him and hits him in the face cutting his cheek and drawing blood and that's when security intervenes. I think they should have dragged her away as soon as they saw him getting uncomfortable and her getting irate but that's my opinion. As she's dragged away, she shouts. "Do you know how much money I've spent on you?" She acts as if that gives her a pass to treat him like garbage and be abusive to him. I have seen this attitude that the more money these so-called "fans" spend on these idols they act entitled to more than just what they pay for and it's absurd. It's beyond absurd really. So you bought 30 of your fave's albums and have been to every concert. Who cares? You got what you paid for and they don't owe you anything more than that. Spending money doesn't mean that you own the artist.

This scene is powerful and really upsetting because no one should go through that. As an international fan outside of Korea, where I am we don't even get fan signs like other places do. I couldn't imagine saying some of the dumb things I see fans saying and doing that aren't this problematic yet still cringe, let alone insulting and physically assaulting someone. The fact that this sasaeng was banging on the table and becoming visibly irate before she even assaulted Ra Ik and security didn't get to her till after she hit him with the bottle is frustrating. He ends up leaving the room and going to the bathroom to calm down and we see that he has been on anxiety medication as he tries to take a pill and drops the whole bottle on the floor.

In another scene we see that sasaengs have broken into his home. This immediately reminded me of Jungkook and what he has been going through. Ra Ik has gotten so used to it it seems that he just tells them to come out into the open from where they are hiding. He calls security and has them escorted out. Not involving the police is where I feel he messed up. They shout mean things at him threatening him as they are dragged way and he yells back at them which they record and post to the internet to make him look bad. When the sasaengs video of him yelling at them goes viral, he's the one his management blames when all he was doing was defending himself against the psycho sasaengs. The agency is more concerned about their image than his safety. Letting the intruders go comes back on him later because they tamper with a vehicle he is riding in which causes an accident. When confronted with this after they are arrested for it, he once again lets them go. This pissed me off too. He justifies letting them go saying that all they'll do if he presses charges is come back more angry later and possibly do worse. So in my opinion what's stopping them from doing worse the next day since he let them go without them taking full legal responsibility for their actions. This is a weak stance and it's why these things keep happening.

Looking at what's happened with Jungkook recently, the police have let these women breaking in or attempting to break into his home off and released them, One was released on the grounds that what she did was seen as "fan behavior." Nope-- fan behavior is voting, streaming, buying albums and staying in a fan's place. Since when is attempted breaking and entering "fan behavior?" Way to normalize stalking. The most recent incident with Jungkook resulted in him getting a restraining order against the woman who tried to break in because as soon as she was released from her first attempt she came back within 24 hours and trespassed on his property again. Letting these psychos go is not it. They need to face legal punishment for their actions and in that legal punishment there needs to be a requirement for intensive psychological treatment to fix the mental issues before they are released back into society. A little delulu is fun but once you cross that line and cannot separate reality from fantasy and it crosses into criminal behavior that needs to be dealt with properly by trained psychiatrists and medical professionals trained to deal with this specific type of mental illness. The criminal aspect needs to be dealt with as well and the punishment should fit the crime.

As the show progresses there are a lot of other issues that they explore as well and the series isn't even done yet. It airs 2 episodes a week on Mondays and Tuesdays and there are 12 episodes total. As of this writing there have been 6 episodes so we are only halfway through.

In episode 5 we see that another member, Choi Jae Hee, becomes obsessed with reading negative comments left online by solo stans and other toxic antis. He sees comments comparing him to Ra Ik and saying things like he is riding the coattails of Ra Ik or that he wouldn't be missed if he left the group. Unfortunately that all sounds familiar as well.  Solos are antis and exist in every fandom. Though Jae Hee is somewhat of an antagonist at this point I felt sorry for him during this episode because anyone reading negativity about themselves online, especially if they haven't done anything to deserve it, would feel threatened by the person they are being compared to. Calling for someone to leave a group they built their life around all because someone else in the group is your bias is crazy. Netizens take things way too far. I'm glad that negative comments and slander are taken seriously by Big Hit and Hybe and they actually do pursue legal action in these situations. We know BTS is active on social media and it makes me sad to think of all of the horrible things they see though we try our best to do damage control by blocking and reporting.

Dating rumors and the parasocial relationships between fans and idols is also a theme in Idol I. Se Na is a fangirl of Ra Ik and hides this from him when she takes on the task of defending him in the murder case against him. His toxic ex, Hong Hye Ju, resurfaces and causes trouble between him and Se Na. Se Na recognizes her as the woman from his dating rumors which he had publicly denied. She realizes that they actually were dating at the time and that the breakup left Ra Ik heartbroken and quite emotionally damaged. She remembers when she spent a few days in her room in the dark, depressed over the rumors. She is confronted by her friend and assistant, Park Chung Jae, who tells her that she can't possibly assume that a man of Ra Ik's age is single and has never been with a woman. This is a common thing among Kpop stans and gets pretty ridiculous when it comes to some of the beliefs around these grown artists over 25 or 30 being virgins and saving themselves because of or for the fans. Seeing idols as virgins or "innocent" as the term is often phrased is wild and there's so much to unpack with that that essays could be written on how wrong it is. Chung Jae makes Se Na think about getting out of her delulu. As the rumor is denied by Ra Ik she came out of her depression which was all because of her own delulu mind. When she realizes that he is human and deserves to be happy in a romantic relationship just like anyone else, she regrets getting so close to him in real life and wishes she could go back to loving him from afar.

I will always say that a little delulu is the solulu. Most of us indulge in a little delulu every now and then. It's fun and healthy as long as you don't take it seriously or lose touch with reality. It can help fans bond with other fans to joke about dating biases or being married to biases. When it gets crazy is when they fight over dating rumors or who can choose whom as a bias. Understanding that idols are human beings is the first step and realizing that when they say they love their fans that that "love" isn't sexual or romantic in the sense of a romantic relationship. That love is more respect and admiration for the work that fans do to keep idols in their career. We make it so that people who enjoy being paid to sing and dance get to be paid quite handsomely to do so. They love the support and respect the dedication of the fans- at least the artists I stan do. There is absolutely nothing sexual or romantic in a relationship sense in their "I love you" to fans. To think anything else is crossing that line.

As crazy as it seems there are people who take that as a romantic declaration directed to them. When their idol speaks they're speaking directly to them. That's a very dangerous thought to hold onto as a fan and if it goes too far it becomes all consuming and that's when people lose touch with reality. I've read the most outrageous letters on Weverse where fans have written that they are going to runaway and marry BTS members when they graduate high school. One such letter a person said that they have been estranged from their family because they chose their love of a BTS member over their family and blamed this member for ruining their life because they fell in love with him. These idols are not responsible for what happens in your mind. They have nothing at all to do with your fantasies or how you decide to see them. There's nothing wrong with crushing on your idols or admiring them but you need to be able to pull yourself out of your delulu fantasies and see them as humans deserving of respect and an opportunity to live as they choose. Sending hate letters on Weverse or flooding their IG comments with hate and threats over dating rumors is sasaeng behavior and it's disgusting.

As Se Na pursues the truth in the case against Ra Ik she realizes he has problems just like normal people do. He has difficult friendship dynamics with the members of his group. He has issues with his mother who is financially irresponsible and uses him for money. He didn't even get to enjoy his relationship because he was supposed to keep it a secret and it was exposed and he had to lie about it and end it. As a result of all of this he doesn't think he deserves love. The only person other than his lawyer that is really on his side is his former housekeeper. That shows how lonely he really is despite having tens of thousands of fans. He can't even trust his agency because they are all about money over everything else.

The series is good for making you think about how difficult idol's lives really are and of course the mystery is entertaining as well. The only issue I have is that I don't think they should steer it towards a romance between Se Na and Do Ra Ik because it defeats the purpose of exposing sasaeng behavior and how delulu can go too far if they make it so she ends up with her bias after all of this. With 6 more episodes left we'll have to see what happens between them and find out who the killer is.

Update:  The show has finished and I give it a 9/10. The lost point is from the relationship aspect because I think it would have been a better drama if they had focused on the idol life and not put the main leads together as a couple. It makes it seem more like being delulu can actually become a reality because the main female lead ended up with her bias. Being that it was a crime drama mixed with romance, I get why they put them together though. It seemed like the writer was ARMY in the last episode because there are some things that seemed pulled directly from the fandom. The fact that the idol's fandom color is purple and they mention how the fans come together now to protect the interest of the idol. There's even a good quick scene where two women who were stalker-like sasaengs at the beginning turn into protective fans and demand that a sleezy tabloid reporter stop taking photos without the artist's consent. I loved that they turned around and did something good for a change and learned from their mistakes. We can only hope, I guess, that some fans actually get it and learn to respect the artist's privacy and respect boundaries set by the fandom and the company. Great series overall.

Some thoughts on racism and anti-Blackness in the fandom

Kpop is based on Black Culture

We need to talk about Black American culture and how it is appropriated by a lot of Kpop groups and disrespected by other groups and fans yet BTS and TXT have a strong appreciation for the culture. Quite a few other K-pop groups have been called out recently for racist behavior and many have been called out for cultural appropriation. In the beginning of their career, BTS had some issues with cultural appropriation as well but, it was addressed and immediately changed after debut. Every time another group or artist in Kpop is called out for racism, some anti brings up RM's pre-debut locks or kinky permed box cut he had at debut. Even the garbage Kpop tabloids go back and do posts about his hair from the past when other groups mess up. Guess what? We do not care. He corrected it by changing hair styles and has never done it again and has acknowledged several times that he has made mistakes in the past. He hasn't exhibited any other racist behaviors since then like others who have used the n-word on video when rapping songs by Black artists or held parties where the theme may has well have been "how can we be racist to Black people today." Other groups/artists make generic canned apologies and continue to act like trash in the faces of Black fans. Antis have made mountains out of molehills and tried to make innocent things into worse while ignoring rappers in other groups saying the n-word and wearing cornrow and box braids (the kind specific to Black culture). BTS pays the proper respect to Black artists and the culture as influences and it's time the fans start doing the same.

Recently an "ARMY" thought it was cool to make a post talking about how much they didn't like the "barking" trend that ARMYs do at concerts. They see it as annoying and disrespectful. Well the "barking" trend is rooted in Black culture. It goes back to the 80s and 90s. People bitched about not liking it and were calling it weird and disrespectful when it's the opposite. It's a way to show appreciation for the performer. It's not a sexual thing and it's not negative. It's crazy how Black Americans are expected to learn about other people's cultures across the world and I see my Black moots being respectful to things we don't always get but, some of you all take every opportunity to bitch about things you don't understand without asking someone who may know better than you or looking it up yourself.

The "barking" as it has come to be called was not about being a dog or calling the other person a dog. In Black slang calling someone your "dawg" isn't even offensive. It means they're your bestie. Someone you can trust. Is Hobi going to get slammed now because you actually listen to him call his friends his 'dawgs' in Hangsang? You don't deserve to enjoy hip hop culture or Kpop if you aren't going to learn the origins. It's funny how all members that have done solo shows where fans have done the "woot woot" cheering ("barking") have enjoyed it. It's not about what fans who push these anti-hip hop culture opinions want. Don't like it? Shut up because no one cares. Go stan a group not based on Black culture then and you can keep your desire for proximity to whiteness and white things and your secret racism.

As K-pop continues to borrow and in some cases appropriate Black culture, there are going to be things that filter over to it that some fans don't get. That's not an invitation to be ignorant and make statements rooted in anti-Blackness about it. You don't get to center yourself and make whole ass posts on what you don't like, expecting ARMY to stop doing it because it's harmless. Your whiteness, Asian-ness, or Blackness that has been muted by your surroundings (including some biracial people who lean heavily into whiteness to assimilate), none of this gives you a pass to be anti-Black about things you don't understand that are becoming a part of Kpop. Just say you like Black culture as long as there isn't a Black face on it because that's what is really going on. I blocked a lot of people on that post about "barking" including the person who made the post because she was told by several people in the comments where it comes from and backtracked to not liking it but not caring if people did it. Well no one cares. Not a single fan asked you. You saw discourse because someone else posted that they didn't like it and you piggy backed off of the response they got and made the same post because you wanted attention. You got it too. When you double down on ignorance when things are explained to you instead of stepping back and learning, you get blocked. Complaining in the chat about being blocked afterwards makes me laugh and I realize I made the right decision. It costs nothing to admit that you were wrong or at the very least admit that maybe it's not a conversation you should involve yourself in. While I'm on the subject, can we stop with the engagement bait "unpopular opinion" posts? I thought we agreed long ago on Threads that that mess was just tacky.

Throwing shoes at the feet of the performer is another sign of approval that comes from the Black community. Hobi has been seen doing this before. It comes from street dance culture. The swag surfing that Yoongi did in Chicago during the D-Day Tour with his dancers is another part of Black culture. When we say we're the blueprint we mean it. That's true whether you like it or not.

Kpop song lyrics even have AAVE or African-American Vernacular English, or Black slang. Sometimes the words are used in the wrong context but they're there nonetheless. Words like "ops", "baddie", and "slay" are all from Black culture. There is literally no room to hate Black culture but listen to Kpop. It's weird to put it mildly.

Disrespectful Treatment of Black Women BTS Collaborates With

One thing we have noticed as Black fans that is gross is how the women BTS collaborates with are treated differently. Before I get into this I will say that no one deserves to be treated badly period so this is not hate or shade to any of the non-Black artists I mention.
When Umi collaborated with Tae on her song "Wherever U R (feat. V of BTS)" I had someone comment on a post I made about her. The comment was calling her a clout chaser. The commenter, one of my moots, a multi who is a Tae bias, later deleted their comments but I keep receipts. This is a white woman who is calling a Black/Japanese woman a clout chaser for promoting her song that Tae collaborated with her on. This is not Tae's song alone. He's the feature here no matter how much ARMY or solos or stans want to focus only on him you can't erase her and you shouldn't. She has also collaborated with other Kpop artists since then. Asian culture is her culture too because she's half Japanese. A white woman is the last person who should have any opinion on her collaborating with an Asian man.
I mentioned that she's Asian and has every right to promote her song and asked the commenter if she perhaps needed to evaluate her opinion because she may have other reasons for not liking Umi outside of her thinking of her as a clout chaser. She deleted her side of the conversation. Calling a Black woman a clout chaser for promoting her own song is stupid. Plain and simple stupidity because if she doesn't do it herself her label probably won't and Black women are the most disrespected group of people in the US. I am one so I know. Things like this are proof. I will come back to this point in a minute so put a mental pin in this. Umi was called a clout chaser for promoting her collaboration with V. For doing her job and promoting her song she was called a clout chaser.  <sticks pin right here, hold that thought>.
This person is still following me and I follow them and I haven't noticed anything else seemingly racist from them so it may be that they are just a V bias that took their stanning of him to a toxic place. I found out on TikTok that the Umi hate at that time had gotten bad. I didn't know because I didn't see it on my socials besides that one comment. I don't have Twitter and I wasn't on TikTok then so I didn't see it. Sometimes people need to just stop and think before they comment or post. Not all opinions need to be shared. What did she think I was going to do? Agree with her. Nope! Umi is a sweetheart flower child that sends love and light and spreads it and has not been problematic. The only people being hateful to her seem to be Tae solos who make up scenarios and try to drag her into their shipper delusions with that other girl from that one girl group (not mentioning because it's not worth it). I've since seen that she has been accused of some delusional crap by toxic shippers and that other fandom and I'm glad she addressed it.
Now lets go back to that pin I asked you to hold. So Umi was accused of being a clout chaser for promoting her song with V. Fast forward to Jhope ft Glorilla on "Killing it Girl." Glorilla was accused of not promoting the song to the liking of a certain group of "ARMY." Now ain't that something. One Black woman collabs with a member of BTS and she's doing too much and another Black woman collaborates with a different member of BTS and she's accused of not doing enough. I don't think it's about what they are or aren't doing collab wise. I think it's about racists wanting to say something negative about Black women and not coming right out and saying, " I don't want them working with Black women." That would be too straight forward and obvious and they know they'd be called out for that and blocked.
Meanwhile Alyssa (a white dancer) who danced with Jhope during the "Killing it Girl" promotions got more respect in my opinion than Glorilla who was actually a part of creating the song with Jhope. Alyssa got her share of hate from psychos too and that was terrible but there was a large part of the fandom that treated her like she was the artist and she's not. People started to follow her socials and follow her to the airport to wait for her as she traveled. That sounds like they were stanning her which is weird behavior. Since when do dancers become idols and collab artists get treated like crap? Get it together. GloRilla deserved more respect overall for her work with Jhope, period.

Megan Thee Stallion did the "Butter" remix with BTS and performed with them on stage at one of the shows for Permission to Dance LA. For the most part ARMY loves Megan and she's loved and welcomed by the fandom. That performance was iconic and ARMY that were there they were blessed to be able to catch that performance live. There were comments hating on her though and her outfit which was just due to jealousy and racism. She was wearing more fabric than what some less endowed women Kpop artists wear on a normal basis but because she is a curvaceous, tall, beautiful Black woman, jealous "fans" took to the comment section to complain and show how absurd they are. BTS is grown men not little boys and even if they were she was wearing more clothes than people typically do on a beach. Nothing about her costume was inappropriate. People just use shields to their racism. I bet if Halsey wore the same thing no one would have said a thing. No shade to Halsey though because I like her but the reaction to these 2 strong women who both have worked with BTS is very different throughout the fandom.

     Racism within ARMY on Threads

With everything going on in the world and the US sliding into a Nazi state of being, life is hard for those of us here that don't bury our heads in the sand and pretend like it's not happening. I made a comment early on in Trump's "presidency" about wanting to enter the Magic Shop and lock the door and dissociate. I realized pretty quickly that I can't do that. I have way too much to lose as a Black woman in this country if I let my empathy go and disappear completely into Kpop and ignore real life. I care too much about myself, my family, and others to run around pretending like nothing is going on and acting sheltered.
That being said, Kpop is one of my safe spaces. My husband's is anime and Korean variety shows. My daughter's safe space is gaming and drawing. We all have to find places we are comfortable to cope with what is going on and Black joy is a form of resistance. What is hard for me is logging into Threads or IG to come into my ARMY safe space and finding gross racism and people who defend it. They may be defending some of it out of ignorance or some weak way of not wanting to get involved (yet you are already involved if you are defending your racist friends) but that is no excuse to be an enabler.
I've been calling out racism in the fandom when I see it and the reaction has had me and others disgusted. We fangirl all the time with people who talk shit in group chats behind our backs. I've seen screenshots where people are clueless about what is going on in the US and act like Black ARMY calling out racism is over reacting. I've had white women DM me to defend their racist friends and argue with me with microaggression filled comments and gaslighting. I've had people try to make me out to be the bad guy and act like I'm misinterpreting what I know damn well is racism just because they don't see it as racist, intended or not. It's exhausting.
We've addressed the MAGA Nazi trolls among us and continue to as we find them. They get added to the blocklist and reported as they are found. Every now and then there are big accounts who get caught in this as well.  Making memes or reels that are racist is grounds to get you on the blocklist and mass reported. There was a shocking reel on Instagram that was posted by a Suga biased "ARMY" and it was so disgusting I couldn't even post to show receipts. This person made a reel where they added blackface to all 7 members of BTS and Afros. They captioned it saying that it was to cheer ARMY up. Cheer who up? The only people cheered up by racism are racists. This person had 93K followers when the post was brought to my attention now they have over 100k.  Shocking and very disappointing (understatement really). This behavior has NO PLACE in BTS ARMY. I'm not giving grace or making excuses for anyone regardless of age or saying people didn't know better. They were reported and I was informed it doesn't go against Instagram Terms of Service so it wasn't taken down. I sent it for further review and was denied again. This is very upsetting but that's how things go on social media sometimes. All I can do is put them on the blocklist and hope people with morals unfollow and block them.
If Black people are expected to know better and respect other cultures and we do, then others need to respect Black culture. We're tired. The comments on that blackface post are as infuriating as the post itself because there are several people laughing and making jokes. I only saw a few people comment that it's racist. The video is 10 weeks old and was brought to my attention by another Black ARMY. So you mean other white and POC ARMY saw it and never said a word or posted about it? Most of the so called ARMY in the comments laughing are of Hispanic or Latino descent as are the ones who liked it which is very telling as well.

     Addressing cultural appropriation

Taehyun from Tomorrow By Together was on a variety show recently where he was asked to describe the group's trainee days. He mentioned that the group studied Black hip hop and rap artists and were told to emulate them. This isn't surprising to Black Kpop fans because we know Kpop is based on Black hip hop and rap culture. What he said was 100 percent right and not controversial but non-Black Kpop fans threw a fit online and tried to come for Black Kpop fans and anyone agreeing with them. They downplayed the significance of the statement and attacked people praising Taehyun. The tabloids on YouTube picked it up and painted it like he caused a divide in the fandom and he didn't. That racial divide is there in Kpop in general like most places because racism is everywhere and needs to be addressed and handled. White and non-white POC fans who seek proximity to whiteness don't want to know that Kpop heavily borrows (or flat out steals in the case of some groups) from Black American culture.

I just officially admitted to myself that I'm more than just a casual TXT fan and am a Moa recently and that was one of the most significant moments making me proud to be Moa. Taehyun is one member who I always noticed in his dance TikToks who loves certain Black culture dances from the 2000s and early 90s and does them so well (I love when he hits the Harlem Shake and the Dougie). He's one of my favorite voices in Kpop outside of BTS. BTS has always addressed their Black influences and still do to this day. They give credit where credit is due when using samples as well and I will always respect them for that. This is why they have the respect of the Black American hip hop and rap community. Their show "American Hustle Life" laid the foundation for that.

P1Harmony is the only group I have ever seen address cultural appropriation directly and how they avoid it when coming up with concepts and working on songs. I had heard a few of their songs when I watched that interview and the answer given by their leader Keeho made me dive deeper and listen to them more and that was 3 years ago. I'm still listening and I show up for them for every comeback.  I have respect for artists who address it before they do something stupid and have to issue a canned wack apology. Learning and respecting the culture that pays your bills should be common sense.

Groups like Kiss of Life and All Day Project embarrass the industry with racist parties on live streams and cornrow wearing slur saying members that grew up in the US so should know better. The ignorant excuse that's often thrown around that "they don't teach about Black American history in Korea" doesn't apply in these situations. Both groups have members that grew up in North America or Canada. Not knowing is never an excuse to be openly offensive especially as a public figure. The fandoms are worse as white and non-Black POC accept apologies for things not done to them and bully Black Kpop fans for being offended by their insensitive racist faves. You can't accept an apology on the behalf of the Black fans who were offended by racist behavior. It's not your apology to accept and you look ignorant saying to someone who has done something racist that you accept an apology for something that never hurt you in the first place while Black fans are ignored and silenced all over again. Our culture, let me say that again OUR CULTURE is not a costume to cosplay. It's 2025 and it would be nice if people understood that.

In conclusion, if you are anti-Black as a performer or a fan you have no business stanning Kpop or even performing it. If you're racist you have no business stanning BTS. ARMY doesn't want you in the fandom and BTS's values have shown in their music and speeches and how they live does not reflect at all that they would accept racist fans. See your way to the door and don't come back. Let it be noted if you didn't already know that your behavior will be clocked and put out there so people can decide if they want to associate with you or not. You were asked to leave. For non-racist ARMY who speak up and support each other, keep doing what you do because I see you and I appreciate you.

Addressing The Saesang Problem and Airport Photos

*Update: there's a link at the end of the post from a live stream Jimin and Jungkook did recently. It's a must see that explains their position on fans coming to the airport.

Given recent news on stalkers I thought I would revisit this topic and go more in depth with it and try to find some solutions or better ways to keep BTS safe from sasaengs. It seems like things are escalating since they have gotten out of the military and we knew that things would happen due to hate campaigns and coordinated attacks from antis. I still don't think all the stuff with that woman who shall not be named is over and I can still sense her mark on some things. We are the biggest fandom in the world though and there has to be a way to combat this. We need to be more vigilant in our reporting (to Hybe) and we need to be more willing to block and stop following these big accounts putting them in danger and stalking them for likes and follows.

Jungkook, V, and RM have been the subjects of stalkers or have had their information leaked that I know of. I haven't heard of the other members having any issues with stalkers thank goodness but all of them have deal with sasaengs behavior at some point. RM has had his travel schedules leaked and had people book train accommodations next to him. The leaker was fired. I'm not sure if charges were filed. V had a stalker who is being sued who tried to get him to sign a marriage agreement and got into an elevator with him. She was arrested eventually. Jungkook has had the worst of it it seems. He has had stalkers outside of his home leaving letters in the letter slot and photographing themselves in front of his home. He also had a sasaeng call his hotel room while he was live streaming once and had someone sending him food orders. Most recently, the day he got out of the military, there was a stalker who tried to break into his home. She was caught and arrested then released. There's also an account on the Threads BTS ARMY Blocklist that claims to have been hacking his iCloud that connects to his iPhone. I suspect that this person is lying for clout but to lie about it is just as bad in my opinion and she has been reported to Hybe. We as fans need to do our due diligence in getting the word out that this behavior is unacceptable and people need to be punished properly for such behavior.

There was an incident recently when Jin's brother asked that a video or photo of Jin and his father eating at a restaurant be taken down and it continued to be shared after the request. How people sit there and call themselves ARMY and have no clue what the title entails is crazy to me. If a family member says to remove a pic or video, you take it down immediately and apologize. It shouldn't be up anyway and ARMY also asked for it to be taken down. Why are you even sharing people's parents? On private time at that and blurred or not if they didn't share it it should NOT be shared period. The fact that his brother had to tell the stalkers to remove it is so sad to me. The parents, other family, and friends are not a part of the group and most are not famous. They have other jobs and families of their own and we shouldn't be following their accounts or posting pics that they posted or even sharing them when they are with the members of BTS unless the guys share it. We live in a world where people's family and friends become targets to psychos trying to get close to the celebrity and they don't need to be exposed in such ways.

There are a lot of forms of stalking and in my opinion it starts small and can build. It's of course not a problem only with BTS but other groups and celebrities as well. It seems like people are getting bolder and this isn't fan behavior but sasaeng behavior. I've seen news involving other artists in Kpop lately and it's sad and wild what they go through. From what I have noticed since I started stanning BTS is that there are different levels of this and they are all potentially dangerous and people who are fans contribute to it in some way shape or form and we all have a responsibility to try to stop it whenever we see it.

Unauthorized Photos and Airport Mobbing

This feels like deja vu because I have written about this on this blog before. Fans need to stop going to the airport to try to take pictures and video and shoot their shot with their faves. It's stalker behavior to obtain the information that a celebrity is travelling and go to the airport to try to meet them or catch a glimpse. I don't get why the press or photographers are there either.  Unless they are covering someone's long absence from the spotlight or someone's return from some major event like the Olympics or World Cup it seems pointless or like a money grab for exclusive photos. I don't get the culture of idols wearing designer brands to the airport, supposedly as directed by the designer they are ambassadors for, and being photographed by the press traveling in the outfit. I don't even know if that's true, but it is an excuse fans give when we say that not even the press should be there. The designers get plenty of time to have the artist photographed in whatever they want when they run their campaigns either in print or through social media videos and commercials as well as all the attention they get from fashion week events. I don't understand why airport fashion is a thing as far as paparazzi swarming the airport. Even so, that should have nothing at all to do with fans being there. Do they even do this in other countries because I didn't know about this till I got into BTS? I don't think it's a thing in the US for paparazzi and brands to stage airport travel shoots.

The press aren't the only ones there to take pics of airport fashion but there are also fan site stalkers trying to get photos of their faves and they create more crowding with their cameras and equipment. If you've seen the K-drama "Her Private Life" you know what I mean. The thing I found cringe about the female lead in the show was that she was a sasaeng fan site photographer. She went to the airport to stalk her bias and she may have even been a solo because there was never any other mention of her stanning the whole group but I digress. She runs a website where she takes these airport photos and uploads them to her fan site online. In reality these fan sites sell the photos for profit or they hold galleries where they display the photos and charge an admission fee. They are making money off of unauthorized photos and unauthorized use of the likeness of the artists (not having permission for the use of the photos from the company or permission for their pop up photo galleries).

Add loud obnoxious fans to the scene at the airport with their phones out recording, screaming, and chasing celebrities and you have a circus of a mess. There are also your everyday travelers and airport staff and security trying to go about their day and do their jobs in the midst of all of this. They are the only ones who should be there and they are being inconvenienced. ARMYs started the Purple Ribbon Project in the past to minimize the chaos, but it just wasn't able to keep going and people have been asking for it to come back. It shouldn't be brought back because there is the issue that it would add too many new people to the mix who may not have the best intentions. The goal is also to not have people come to the airport at all unless they are travelers and not fans trying to get a pic of their faves so bringing it back would be counterproductive and cause just as much chaos. People would sign up to be front line ribbon holders just to get to go and try to be close to the members. The original creators of it have said that they wouldn't bring it back.

Whatever your stance is on the press being there to photograph them in head to toe Celine or Gucci or whatever, these designers can choose another way to get their ambassador photos without putting people in danger. That's exactly what's happening whether they admit it or not. The idol worship culture brings people to the airport to catch a glimpse of their faves and get footage of them recorded on their own phones and cameras and this is a problem that is only going to get worse if  it isn't addressed. It seems like only a handful of us see the big picture. When we bring it up people argue that it's legal and official because it's Dispatch or whatever K-media site and how quickly ARMY forgets that some of these same sites dragged and continue to drag Yoongi through the mud for no reason and you support them every time you share a pic from the airport. You promote the culture that smothers them when they travel. I won't be giving engagement to it at all going forward. Some will be blocked, some muted, and maybe if more people focused on official Hybe Big Hit photos or ones the members post then this would get better.

Whenever BTS travels they post pics on Instagram or Weverse, often from the plane, to let us know they are travelling. If it is an official schedule they let us know and they don't have to do that but they choose to. Personal schedules they usually don't and that's none of our business anyway and we should respect that as fans.

Someone also tried to talk their way around it by lying saying that it hurts their brand reputation to not share the pictures. No, it does not. The brand reputation is based on a lot of factors and ignoring some airport photos won't ruin that. It came from Tae solos of course so truth isn't their best quality anyway. The best way to support the brand reputation of the members is to like, comment, and share video and pictures from the brands and official magazine sites that post them. If you see a post on Threads from the brands or fashion magazines, go to Instagram and find the original and like, comment, and share to make sure it does numbers and let the brands know we see and approve. If you find one and share it on Threads then add the Instagram link as well to make it easier to get to.

  Stalker Influencers

Stalker Influencers are a whole other issue I have noticed lately. I don't do influencer culture and I don't ever follow someone just because they have a lot of followers so this is new to me to explore. I learned how fake influencers are when I used to watch family vloggers on YouTube years ago. I stopped when I realized it is all about money to these people. Family vloggers are a whole other can of worms that's off topic here but the idea is the same. They use their kids to make money and stalker influencers use their proximity or perceived proximity to the members to do the same.

What are stalker influencers? Stalker influencers are the big accounts that are monetized that post content that should not be posted. They follow celebrities to get a scoop or inside information so they can leak it or they take pictures or video in places they shouldn't have access to, ex: finding out where they are shooting a show or a video and getting onto set or near enough to get footage to leak or showing up at a hotel or restaurant and getting inside and taking video or pictures and posting them.

There was a woman who stalked Jungkook at his boxing class and recorded him through the window. She signed up for classes with the same boxing coach and took pics of her training with that coach. She had a large following and she had a Patreon account (account used by content creators to charge subscriptions for subscriber exclusive content). She talked about JK on her main Instagram and she posted some pics and video but you had to join her Patreon and pay money to get the exclusives where she would post the full videos and pictures. This is absolutely disgusting and when you realize these people are not only getting paid every time a post gets engagement, good or bad, then they get paid from what they post on other platforms where they can charge for memberships and subscriptions and potentially have more secrecy with what they post. Jungkook mentioned the situation in a live stream. He can't even be safe exercising because these people cross the line.

There was another stalker influencer we put on the blocklist recently who was outside Hybe the day when RM and V were discharged from the military as well as the day JK and Jimin were released. She has a popular Instagram and TIkTok account. I blocked her so I don't remember her name now. She started as a travel blogger and decided to grift off of the whole Hallyu movement by moving to South Korea as a white European and documenting her experience. She's what they like to call a "digital nomad" who shows how they make a living off of traveling and being travel influencers and can work from anywhere. A lot of it is a scam. She was one of the people who refused to leave after Jimin posted for ARMY to go home for safety reasons. He was concerned that there could be a crowd crush because there were so many people still there after they did the livestream. Staff came out and told the crowd to leave and this girl actually threatened physical violence to the woman who came to her section. Staff didn't hear her but it was disrespectful and stupid of her to say that. She wanted her clout pictures of JK and Jimin leaving so she got rude. She was also told to not come out and do that during Yoongi's discharge by someone in her comment section. She responded with "watch us." I'm so glad that Yoongi's discharge was not handled the same way the others were and that he was able to leave without having to deal with stalkers who were told not to show in the first place.

When these accounts get monetized and thousands of people follow them to feed their gossip fix and nosy attitudes, nothing is off limits. They posted JK's home and were reported yet people still showed up while he was enlisted to leave letters in his mail slot. One woman flew all the way from China and stood outside of his home for at least 10 hours with her suitcase, was seen on video brushing her teeth, and tried to break into his home (she was also seen on camera messing with his keypad to the place like she was trying to guess the code to gain entry). People think those real estate videos exposing where members live on YouTube are harmless and they are not. Your intent is not the same as someone else's. Blowing it off as just entertainment or "they know they're famous. It comes with the territory of being and idol," could mean injury or worse to someone we all care about.

We need to stop feeding these people. Because they are monetized they use the money to take more trips and follow the guys. The people who follow them and praise them and give them constant engagement are literally putting food on the table for them and paying for them to travel to stalk idols. The ones paying for Patreon subscriptions or other services that cost money for a subscription for updates pay for them to continue this behavior. People often ask what jobs these sasaengs have that they have all this time off to be everywhere and all this money to travel to South Korea and live this supposedly lavish lifestyle and that's a big part of it. The ones who are fans or followers of these sasaengs are paying for it. Some of them have family money and decent jobs but others do this for a living. The way to get them out of our spaces is to starve them by hitting their money supply. Report them to Hybe and report them for stalking on each platform. Also stop watching and subscribing to their content. Pass the info to your moots as well because some people just don't understand the dynamic of it all. Once it's explained it makes more sense.

I mentioned fan sites before. I didn't know anything about that before I got into BTS. If you don't know you might think they are hired by the company or something but they're not. The pics you see with watermarks all over them and they are so up close and nowadays some are heavily AI edited usually come from them. Some of them have been blacklisted by Hybe and are not allowed at BTS official events anymore. A sasaeng that's all over the timeline right now or has been for the past few days is Nuna V. If you shared Tae pics from Paris or saw them and they had her name on them then you shared sasaeng stalker fan site photos. I've been blocking and muting people sharing her pictures and video. She's a rich one who follows Tae and even gets entry into some exclusive areas and takes photos. She has been blacklisted by Hybe but the Celine events are not Hybe sponsored so she's always there to stalk Tae. And to answer a question that is apparently out there that was asked awkwardly this week- no BTS does not support fan sites. Some of these stalkers take unauthorized photos and hold unauthorized photo gallery showings of their pics and use the intellectual property or IP of BTS to make money off of them and ARMY. They also have fought fans for seats the fans paid good money for at shows because they aren't allowed to take their telephoto lenses in (they're banned at concerts) and they try to steal good seats to take their fan site pics.

Parasocial Relationships

I didn't even know what parasocial relationships were until I got into BTS. I had never heard the term until ARMY started talking about it but I have definitely had parasocial relationships. Parasocial relationships are the connections people have to celebrities or other public figures that are one-sided and the other party may not be aware of the first party. In the case of BTS and ARMY it feels less single-sided every day. BTS performs and does live streams and keeps ARMY informed of their professional lives and things going on off the stage. ARMY shows love and respect back to BTS by voting and streaming and supporting them when things get tough. We report to the legal team when things happen that need to be investigated further in order to protect them and we try to handle things within the fandom when we see disrespectful behavior towards them and their autonomy.

RM has stated that he is a fan of ARMY. RM says, "Thank you for being my fans. Our fans. I am also your fan. I am the fan that silently supports you through your personal battles and loneliness in life. Whether I be backstage or in the work room, I send you my fan letters written in long musical notes, through music. I wish you'd read that sound of missing you dearly. Even though I'm incapable of expressing it all in words, even if I can't do it all through music, I send you my utmost support." Now that's just beautiful and in some magical way, it doesn't feel one-sided at all. Some people never hear messages of support like that from people in their actual lives and it is really comforting to get that from BTS. As a longtime Coldplayer, I love the letters we get from Chris Martin every now and again checking in and he always says he hopes all is well and drops wisdom along with song recommendations. Coldplay are Gen X so they aren't as active as BTS on line in that aspect but coming from the Coldplay fandom and cherishing those letters or video messages from Chris to becoming BTS ARMY and getting into BTS who does live streams and posts on Weverse telling us to be careful in bad weather, not to get sick, and to be happy and healthy is a beautiful thing. It makes me feel loved and respected.

That being said, some people know when to turn it on and off and don't slip out of touch with reality. Curious as to what makes people go that far and cross that line, I decided to briefly look into the psychology of it all. How do you go from daydreaming healthily about BTS to flying from China to South Korea to camp outside of Jungkook's house the day he is discharged from the military? How do you get that delusional that you are sitting there for 10 hours waiting for him to come home, you have your suitcase, and you're messing with the keypad on his door trying to get in? How do you get to the point where you are chasing him through the airport with your suitcase and posting on Twitter that he's supposed to run away with you (I still wonder if these were two different women or the same person)? How do you hop into an elevator with V holding a marriage certificate for someone you have never met demanding that he sign it? How do you get the audacity to buy train info for Namjoon and book a seat next to him? I couldn't fathom losing touch with reality that badly.

According to a National Institute of Health study done in the US, factors leading to stalking behavior are boredom, thrill seeking behavior, and disinhibition. Disinhibition is defined as the inability to control impulsive behaviors. This all makes sense when you put it all together because people who are bored will often create fantasies involving their idols. Though this is normal to an extent, the people with the other factors like thrill seeking behavior and disinhibition are the ones who don't think anything of driving to the airport to try to get pictures of an idol or in the extreme cases, flying out of the country to stalk their home and attempt to gain entry. They don't have shame. They become so delusional that to them it's normal. Their idols belong to them and are talking directly to them during those Weverse posts and live streams rather than 7 or 8 million people. This behavior is dangerous.

When I think about how audacious and arrogant these BTS stalkers are getting it scares me. One  particular case when the world lost an amazing music artist due to a psycho that stalked him and murdered him was John Lennon. A member of one of the most iconic bands ever--The Beatles, was killed by a stalker on Dec 8,  1980. He was shot in front of his home at night. The deranged stalker Mark David Chapman was obsessed with him yet was judgmental of him. He hung outside of Lennon's home as did other fans earlier in the day and that same day he had gotten an autograph from Lennon. He came back later and shot and killed him. This was a devastating murder and the killer is a vile and disgusting as the come saying that he killed Lennon so he could become famous and that he didn't mind taking a human life to get that fame (source: People magazine). Chapman admits to being jealous of Lennon as well and saying that Lennon seemed to have everything. He was out of work at the time and was jealous of the lifestyle Lennon was able to live. A lifestyle that John Lennon earned through all of his hard work as a musician and songwriter. When jokes are made that these haters and trolls are "jobless" they really don't seem funny to me and now I really understand why because there's a psychological factor of feeling like a failure and jealousy that plays into the actions of these people. Combined with idol worship and obsession, it's dangerous.

No one knows what someone else is capable of. The sharing of information on where an idol is at any moment whether it is in a restaurant or what hotel they are staying at or even the details of where they live could lead to something horrible happening and people blow it off as just entertainment or say that they know what they are getting into when they become celebrities. This is the same kind of gaslighting and victim blaming that abusers do and as a fandom of mostly women we should know better. I hate how that double standard exists. When stalking happens to women we would be calling for the man's head on a silver platter yet when it happens to BTS I have seen disgusting comments about how they need to do better or they need more security despite them sometimes having 4 or 5 security guards on 1 member.

Sharing airport photos could lead to something devastating happening. The more people that show up at the airport and the more that are able to get close to BTS, the more dangerous it gets. You can't justify sharing airport photos without seeing the bigger picture that the press fashion airport photos leads to people showing up to take their own photos. You can't be for the airport photos being alright to share but not be actively advocating loudly on your platform for the airport to provide safe entry and exit for the celebrities passing through. Incheon was going to do a private entrance for idols but changed their minds when netizens complained (because their idols safety means literally nothing to them if they can't take photos and video and get their proximity to wealth and fame).

Saying that they should travel via private jet only is an ignorant take too because we're dealing with global climate change and terrible storms all over the world, polar ice caps melting, natural disasters, global warming, and deaths from all of the above. Flying private jets constantly along with all of the commercial jets in the sky is only going to contribute negatively to climate change. According to a recent study done and published in Communications Earth, and Environment the most frequent private jet flyers produced 500 times more carbon dioxide emissions than the average person does in a whole year in 2023.

BTS has been vocal in the past against things that hurt the environment like RM on NFTs and J-hope deciding to release Jack in the Box as a digital only album until some fans screamed on social media about him not putting it out as a physical album. The point was to go digital only to curb wasteful buying of some fans who would buy multiple CDs for the photocards and throw away the CD and plastic packaging of extras. He saw that fans were complaining and talked about it at the end of the Jack in the Box documentary and later decided to release it as a physical album to please demanding mantis. Hybe was going to do a series of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) for each artist and RM spoke up against BTS being a part of it. Over 1000 were released apparently and less than 100 sold of Le Sserafim "Antifragile" and Hybe scrapped the idea. BTS may use private jets sometimes but I doubt it would be something they would be on board using every single trip due to the environmental impact.

Conclusion

ARMY is the biggest fandom in the world and it's no secret that we have a lot of pull when it comes to collectively deciding where our attention goes. We can't control what other people post because clout chasing is a thing and speaks louder than common sense to some people. We ask them to remove pictures and they leave them up for engagement. Solos feed stalker influencers because they get their exclusive pics and rumors on their fave from them and they see it as another thing they have that sets them apart from ARMY (thinking they are superior in their own weirdo way). A lot of these accounts that are ok with stalking know full well that what they do is against guidelines and that they attract solos and antis often with their content. They don't care. Negative attention still gets them paid through the attention it brings to their accounts.
What we can do as ARMY is report and block whenever applicable. That means reporting to Hybe, the platforms, and blocking on all platforms. By mass reporting we can potentially get their accounts shut down. Even if they are temporarily suspended or have some posts removed it can still make it difficult for or them to come back and they may get the picture. Using the protect.hybecorp.com portal will put things into Hybe's legal team's hands to handle and though it may take a while, as legal things tend to, they will handle cases where they have enough evidence to prosecute.
As far as airport photos and airport stalking goes, I do not plan to give attention to any posts where they show up. That means 0 engagement period if I have to mute or block frequent posters. They will say that the pics are legal (or ok to post) if they are told to remove them but the ones being used also come from Korea Dispatch and Dispatch is on the media blocklist indefinitely. It doesn't matter if we complained and these K-media entities issued half-assed apologies or not. We shouldn't give them clicks and attention after how they treated Yoongi and that includes them posting airport photos of the members. Pulling attention and not engaging with the pictures on a large scale will eventually make the people posting stop sharing as much as they realize their numbers go down. This will matter more to large accounts particularly on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok where they are monetized. Do the same on Threads of course. The less engagement given the less these pic will show on our feeds. The hopeful outcome is that if the brands and the press still decide to continue these airport photo shoots then at least maybe the fans will stop showing up if they won't get engagement from posting. If people stop going to the airport and mobbing artists then they can travel freely with less stress and that will make BTS happy which should make ARMY happy as well.

Threads and Instagram BTS ARMY Blocklist

The blocklist is hopefully working to keep most unwanted things from our feeds. I'm glad that when some drama from Twitter makes its way to Threads I often have no idea what is going on and I like to keep it that way. But we have our share of solos and stalkers on Threads using the app and Instagram to build followers by sharing things they shouldn't and invading the privacy of the members. I keep noticing ARMY adding people to the "btsarmyblocklist" on Threads that are already on there and I get requests to add people that are already on it. Unfortunately on Threads we don't have the blocklist capabilities integrated into the app like they do on Bluesky (probably because they want to be able to continually push negativity and politics to your feed and they don't want you to have half of those people blocked already). That blocklist capability makes it easy to block a lot of accounts all at once and automatically shows everyone on the list so you can see who is on it as well as manually block whom you choose as you go down the list or just block the full list all at once.

I decided to put the blocklist that has the topic as "btsarmyblocklist" in a spreadsheet. I know someone already did that, but from what I'm told it has been deleted and is no longer available or maintained. I plan to keep mine on this blog and add to it as necessary. Keep using the hashtag or topic "btsarmyblocklist" and I will update it with names from there.

You all know the rules for adding someone to the blocklist but I will reiterate some of them.

  1.  When you add someone to the blocklist, try to get screenshots of what they did to go on it. We started doing this because people were deleting posts once they got called out. The only exception to screenshots or video is if someone is spreading stalker photos or video of the members in public or private and we don't want to further spread that. (Update: Threads now has a spoiler feature that censors pics by blurring them. You could use that on your screenshot but try not to share actual videos. They will see what you mean when they go to the page to block if it hasn't been deleted. Feel free to briefly describe the content being shared and why they are to be blocked). Also if something is particularly gross or offensive like sexual images or offensive language you can just put their screen name or a screenshot of their bio page and explain why you are adding them to the list.
  2.  Don't add anyone to the list out of spite or just because they made you mad. In the process of pulling from the list I saw a few people that I questioned why they were added. I usually go through their replies to see if they have had any other comments that would be a reason for them to be added but sometimes there aren't. Also I saw an instance where someone instigated an argument with a person that was put on the blocklist. Don't do that. Stay out of other fandom's business and if you don't like something you don't always have to comment. If you start something with someone like fan wars or arguing about genres with people that aren't in the Kpop circle and they clap back responding to you that's not really a reason to put them on the blocklist. You should personally block them but that doesn't mean it's a matter for the fandom in particular. You may find you both end up on the list so it's best not to instigate fanwars because we don't do that as Threads ARMY.
  3. Fact check before you add people. If you aren't sure if something belongs on the list, ask a more seasoned ARMY. Reverse search photos to see where they come from (use Google Lens).  If you think someone is a solo but you're not sure you can always ask a more seasoned ARMY who can go through their account and see if they see red flags. If you have questions don't hesitate to ask the more knowledgeable ARMY. You can also DM me on Instagram and I will take a look at it and get back to you.
  4. I don't take anyone off the list for apologizing so don't ask. If someone feels they have been added to the list unjustly it can be reviewed but this list is also a guide. No one is demanding that you block anyone on the list it's just a good guide to things we don't stand for and don't want on our feeds. This is why we require that you add screenshots for proof unless it is a situation where we don't want to spread rumors or unauthorized pics or video or potentially spread sexually explicit material further (it happens). The more of these people that aren't blocked by most ARMY, the more likely it will be that they will show on your feeds from trolling your moots or their pics will show because the algorithm will pick them up because they post about BTS. Blocked means you won't see their content at all.
The spreadsheet is in viewer only mode and only I have access to add to the spreadsheet. When you add people to the blocklist on Threads using the tag "btsarmyblocklist" I will go through it periodically and try to add the accounts there to the spreadsheet. To search the list quickly for someone on a laptop or pc use Control+F to find a name within the spreadsheet and a window will pop up on the top right for search. On phones you should be able to click the 3 dots in the top right corner and go to "find and replace" and under "find" type your search.

**Update: Threads doesn't automatically block people on IG anymore when you block them on Threads. Don't forget to manually block them on Instagram as well so the same accounts don't end up in your Instagram feed or get recommended to you on Instagram.

Media Blocklist for ARMY

It's no secret at this point that even the media uses BTS and ARMY for clicks and engagement. From Forbes Magazine writers trying to instigate fanwars for clicks and pitting BTS members against each other in negative ways to writers using ARMY as bait to write controversial things and put the fandom out to be toxic, there are several people whom we need to make sure we are not giving attention to and are blocking. If we report and block on as many platforms as possible then they don't get access to us and they don't get to use us for attention. I'm going to make this an actual list on here that I will try to keep updated. It's just easier to make one here than it is to do on Threads. I already have one on Bluesky as well if you follow me there (it's under my lists).

When we see articles that are appealing in a positive way or shocking in a negative way, our first instinct is to comment and share with others. We need to be more alert as we do this and be cautious of what we share. Some of these people will go back and forth between good positive articles, videos, social media posts and bad ones and they will use the attention and get paid. We should avoid them at all costs and not engage with them at all. We also need to be mindful of the comments we make because there are writers among us and ones who stalk social media for ARMY comments to use as pull quotes and screenshots in their articles. They don't need your permission since social media is public. I see this a ton with Twitter and not as much with Threads but your Threads are searchable on Google now so if they want to find quotes from Threads they can and could pull yours and use them.

Media Blocklist for BTS ARMY

  • Hugh McIntyre- writer for Forbes Magazine-pits BTS members against each other and compares their achievements in a negative way; negatively compares BTS to other groups, will make positive articles to get clicks and then write negative ones shortly after, often within days of each other. My post on him is here.
  • Stefne Miller- Armyproject529 founder-wrote memoir about being "army" and threatened to write a chapter about being bullied by ARMY when she made negative comments about RM in an now viral Tik Tok and was called out on it (was not bullied but respectfully called out on it by most and blocked those trying to talk to her respectfully about it), Tagged RM in the negative comment about him hoping he'd see her post, see my post on her here
  • Jung Min Jae- Reporter who defamed Yoongi's name saying he gave conflicting reports to police during the scooter incident when he never did
  • Wallea Eaglehawk-aka The BTS Theorist- has a podcast and Substack blog called The BTS Theorist where she puts out a lot of negative content about ARMY calling us bullies but puts herself in the middle as "army" and says her plan is to show the dark side of the fandom so we can address it, she knows she can grift off of the solos and the antis with this and wrote an article all about ARMY "cancelling" her because she didn't like a song, has several books about ARMY, puts other toxic so-called "army" on her podcast like Professor Bangtan and agrees with all their crazy lies about Hybe and BTS (toxic manti behavior)
  • Traci J. Reeves-aka ProfessorBangtan on IG- pro-boycott of Hybe and BTS because of ignorantly linking them to Israel by association with Scooter Braun (because he has Jewish ancestry and supports Israel which has 0 to do with BTS), makes idiotic statements about BTS and said that Hybe staged the Yoongi scooter incident to get attention during the enlistment break when we know how absurd that is when we had so much content we couldn't keep up (need for attention where?), a Blink but tries to say she's "army"
  • Sakshma Srivastav-Indian TV host- made toxic comments about ARMY bullying another idol that were not true just to get attention
  • Jeff Benjamin- "journalist" who has written for Forbes and Billboard - has used BTS's enlistment for clicks and misrepresented their military enlistment as a potential breakup of the group, stans groups that have fandoms notorious for hating on BTS and writes like a Kpoppie anti
  • Lina Greco-  FL blogger who followed Namjoon in Tampa and recorded herself walking behind him. She was basically stalking him and invading his privacy while he was on private time and tried to argue that at least she didn't speak to him. Following closely and recording him from behind as he walked is stalking. Goes by "linalunamar" on IG and Threads
  • WFLA- FL TV news station posted on their IG unauthorized CCTV video of BTS arriving at a restaurant in Tampa FL on their private time

Tabloid blogs and sites to avoid

I've already written a bit about tabloid blogs to avoid that write about K-pop. We need to not read and not pay attention to these sites because they pay writers to come up with rumors about people and they take the chance on getting sued for libel. The ones with financial backing coming from rich investors like Koreaboo don't care about getting sued because they have the money to pay. Smaller sites have more to lose. Here is a list of some to avoid. I'm not including YouTube tabloids because there are way too many of them and we'd be here all day. Just continue to report and block those as you find them.

Koreaboo
Soompi
Allkpop
Pop Base
Sportskeeda
Pannchoa
The Qoo
Hindustan Times
The Joe Budden Podcast - he made racist comments about BTS before
The Shade Room
Times of India
Pinkvilla

Rainews.it ---Italian news--used the police line photo of Yoongi on 6/21 after his discharge on an article about his release from the military
The Indian Express- negative Suga articles post military

PBS News Hour- made a Threads post excluding Yoongi and called sasaengs fans and interviewed one of the Brazilians at the military discharge event, also added the sasaengs in their TikTok on the discharge

Buzzfeed Celebrity-used Jin to get followers by saying they were going to withhold his interview till they got to a certain number of followers and asked ARMY to run up the followers number and they'd drop the interview for us knowing they were already going to have to show the interview regardless, they had lost followers because they had body shamed Blue Ivy (12) for wearing a strapless gown to a premier and caught backlash for it from Beehive and generally everyone so they felt they'd use ARMY to build back up

Vogue Thailand - On Aug 6 2025 they made a VMAs post on Twitter saying to vote for Blackpink members (one or 2 of their girlies is Thai or something) and they hashtagged it for VMAs to disqualify Jimin and started drama where people were thinking Jimin's album wasn't qualified due to the time period of release. VT issued an apology lying saying it wasn't intentional when their social media manager literally had to type the tweet for it to post. Beyond unprofessional!

Koreanophiles- (on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads)- they call themselves a media company but must be relatively new, probably just a tabloid blog. Posted an Instagram post that says that V (Taehyung) purchased the most expensive apartment in SK and showed a picture of the building the apartment is supposedly in. The description under the pic also mentions the neighborhood and other famous celebs that live in the building (allegedly). This is a gross privacy violation and it's how the stalking of Jungkook at his home started with some blog or YouTube influencer posting that he bought a new home and it spread like wildfire leading to people leaving notes in his mail slot and taking selfies in front of his home and at least 2 stalkers trying to break in.

Bloomberg- Writer Lucas Shaw- 10.27.25, main photo excludes Yoongi, article about the comeback full of unsubstantiated rumors about tour dates, also lies and says they disbanded temporarily during military service when that never happened bc they were always a group and just released prerecorded solo activities during enlistment

I will add to this list as new things come up. I don't have receipts from the scooter incident of K-media but I will add them if anyone has them just let me know.

Important Vocabulary for new ARMY

As BTS ARMY grows, we welcome new ARMY to the fandom. I know in the beginning it can be overwhelming and I want to help in any way I can. There are some terms that we use and things that may confuse you as you get into the fandom as they confused me when I found BTS and joined the fandom later on online. Never be afraid to ask questions because some things we do in ARMY are different than a lot of other Kpop fandoms. I don't claim to be any official authority on this but I learned a lot from OG ARMY on Twitter back when Twitter was a good place for ARMY to share info without all the toxicity that's there now. I kept quiet and took notes and now I try to pass on what I know as I learn more. Here's some terms we use frequently that you should learn.

  1. Solo- Solo stans don't like all the members of the group. They take a bias and they only vote and stream for their fave when they are involved and may even participate in sabotage like voting for other groups  or artists to see the members they don't like lose, They make toxic comments like "ARMY doesn't support (member)" or they will call ARMY solos when they get called out for being solos. There are people saying that not all solos are bad but the only ones that are good usually stay out of fandom business and aren't as active in fandom spaces. For example I like Jackson Wang and got into his solo work and no shade but I have no interest in GOT7 and I don't go into their fandom groups and talk about them or other members at all. Solos of BTS members stay in our spaces and intentionally bully and cause trouble. Be aware and block freely to keep the peace.
  2. Diet solo- pretends not to be a solo and may not be as vocal about it but will show their full solo colors eventually, puts their fave over the other members but will say they aren't a solo till they are exposed. They will blame ARMY when their bias loses voting and will use terms like "you ARMY" distinguishing themselves from the fandom yet still saying they aren't solos.
  3. Multi stan- someone who stans multiple kpop groups. Supporting multiple groups is not an issue but if you say you stan BTS then you should be prioritizing streaming and voting for them and not leaving when it's voting time and coming back when it's over or voting for your other faves while we work hard for BTS, beware of them sometimes saying "BTS has enough awards so I'm voting for (other group) now because they deserve it" I have seen this way too many times and ARMY votes and supports BTS when BTS is nominated period.
  4. Anti- another term for haters, solos and sasaengs are antis, they engage in fan wars and post rage bait posts to get ARMY involved in fan wars, they invade the privacy of the members and make up excuses for exposing private information just so they can seem popular putting BTS at risk
  5. Manti- usually solos but not always, but they are so extra that they try to demand things from Hybe or Big Hit and complain about how things are done, they may complain about the packaging of 1 member's albums compared to another's or the promos and start campaigns to trend things on Twitter like "Hybe protect (this member or that member)" or make posts demanding things like physical CDs when only digital are available, they try to act like they can do better at the job of promoting and managing the artists than the artist or company themselves
  6. Company Stan-is an insult that antis and solos like to throw at ARMY who listen to other groups within Hybe or when we defend Hybe from solo and anti slander
  7. OT7=ARMY- OT7s are ARMY and ARMY is OT7, solos are not ARMY and will put down ARMY and are disrespectful to us. ARMY loves all 7 members of BTS. You can have a bias and still be OT7 and you can not have a bias and be OT7. Both are equal and it's not better or worse not to have a bias and not having a bias doesn't put you above those who do. If you show up for all 7 in voting and streaming and respecting all 7 members you are OT7, there also os no such thing as ARMY Seokjinnies or ARMY pjms - we do NOT combine solo fandom names with ARMY to signify our bias I'm ARMY and my bias is Namjoon I'm not ARMY moonchild
  8. Daesang The highest grand prize awards in South Korean music shows are called daesangs.
  9. Bonsang- The second highest awards in South Korean music shows are bonsangs. Bonsangs are called main prizes and are awarded to many artists. Ex: at the MAMA awards 2024 Jungkook, Tae, and RM all won bonsangs along with several other artists while Jimin won the daesang.
  10. Moot- moot is short for mutual friend or mutual follower on social media so the people you follow who also follow you back are your moots and you would be their moot.
  11. Nugu- the term nugu or 누구 comes from the phrase "who are you" in Korean or 누구셰요 (nuguseyo) meaning " who is it",  it is used to refer to newer artists, groups and can be a normal term or used in a derogatory manner depending on how you say it
  12. Bias-- bias is the member you feel the most connected to, some people say favorite but I don't use the word favorite because I love all 7 and it sounds too exclusive of the other members to say favorite.
  13. Bias wrecker- Your bias wrecker is the one that always gets under your skin in the best way and grabs your attention from your bias. All of BTS constantly wreck me but Jungkook is my main bias wrecker
  14. Sasaeng- sasanengs are those who engage in extreme behavior as anti-fans and stalkers invading the privacy or violating the privacy of idols. They stalk them in public and private and post pictures and video as well as show up to locations where they are asked not to be like private taping of videos or shows and military discharge locations. Stalking them online and sharing private info is sasaeng behavior as well
  15. Kpoppies- This is a term that refers to the rest of kpop fans as a whole outside of a particular fandom. ARMY in my opinion uses it to refer to the rest of kpop because BTS and ARMY are often left out of conversations despite being the biggest global group and fandom in the industry. Kpoppies can be derogatory or not depending on use.
  16. Member focused accounts- Member focused accounts are accounts that only post about 1 member but are not solos. It can be hard sometimes to determine if they are solos or not but with some checking the accounts and word choices they use when posting you can figure it out. If not ask other knowledgeable ARMY to check it out for you. Member focused accounts are good for getting pics and video of the members and usually good at providing updates on specific members.
Hope these definitions help you with understanding things as you get used to conversations within the fandom and in fandom spaces. If I think of any more I will add to this later.

BTS Members RM, V, Jungkook and Jimin Complete Military Service

After a long wait, BTS's RM (Kim Namjoon), V (Kim Taehyung), Jimin (Park Jimin) and Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook) have completed their mandatory service in the South Korean military. Members Jin (Kim Seokjin) and J-Hope (Jung Hoeseok) have already served and were discharged June 12, 2024 and October 17, 2024 respectively. The final member to be discharged, Suga aka Agust D (Min Yoongi),  will be discharged on June 21. Suga has been enlisted the longest due to his social service assignment.

ARMY, BTS's strong loyal fan base waited patiently on the streets near the Hybe building to catch a glimpse of the guys as they arrived to the company on both days of discharge (RM and V on June 10 and Jungkook and Jimin on June 11). Many more fans tuned in online to watch the press conference from Chuncheon. Hybe and BigHit sent out a memo to the fan base via Weverse app and advised as they have in the past that fans are not to come to the sites where members are being discharged for security reasons and asked that fans stay away from the site and "convey warm regards and encouragement" in their hearts. ARMY did just that by gathering at Hybe, hosting online watch parties, gathering on social media and waiting for the return of 4 more of the 7 members total to return and waiting on Suga as well.

Though the final location where the members were meeting up to meet the press was not formally announced to fans, fake fans seeking internet clout including a Brazilian delegation led by a travel agent called Bom Dia Coreia on Instagram, showed up to the site at Chuncheon against Hybe's memo rules and squatted outside of the gates to live stream and stalk the members. They do this for internet attention to get likes and follows and get paid on their monetized accounts. They have since locked down their pages and gone private after being called out for such inappropriate behavior. The press fed their disrespectful actions and allowed them to stay. They returned the next day for Jungkook and Jimin's release and proceeded to scream disrespectfully while the members were conveying messages to the media and ARMY who were watching online. At one point during the broadcast you could see security getting visibly annoyed at the crowd who wasn't supposed to be there anyway. One particularly odd group showed up wearing all black both days as if they were attending a funeral. Sources say they are called anti-fans and the reason they attended in such dreary costumes is still unclear.

ARMY online flooded social media with love for all members on their release days and well wishes for the future. RM and V touched ARMY's hearts with their goofy antics. RM showed up playing his saxophone wearing sunglasses to complete the look from the Squirtle meme that went viral and left skipping holding onto V. V displayed his Tata mic innocent face while delivering his speech. Both went on a live stream later on separately to greet ARMY. RM spoke of his struggles and plans for the future and V vibed to some music in one of his trademark short streams that typically last less than 15 minutes.

Jimin and Jungkook were discharged the day after RM and V as they had served together in the same unit. Both looked happy and healthy as they showed up to speak to the press at Chuncheon. Live streams of the moment were plagued with buffering and loud sasaengs screaming during the speech so ARMY had to rely on online ARMY translators later to convey the message from the two maknaes. Later on they did a joint live stream where they also ate and discussed future plans. Both seemed in good spirits and full of giggles in a room full of flowers and balloons celebrating their return.

Next up ARMY eagerly awaits the return of Min Yoongi who will be discharged on June 21. Suga's discharge from military service will make BTS whole again as BTS is seven members and the second oldest member and one of the 3 rappers will be back. Suga has been gone the longest due to his assignment to social service in the military. He was assigned social service duty in order to protect his shoulder (which was injured years ago in a car accident) from further damage after having had surgery on it in 2020. Social service assignments last 21 months compared to other assignments that are usually 18 months.
